STAR Method Worksheet
Framework for Answering Behavioral Interview Questions
What is the STAR Method?
The STAR method is a structured way to respond to behavioral interview questions. These questions typically start with "Tell me about a time when..." or "Give me an example of..." Using STAR helps you provide complete, compelling answers.
S
Situation
Set the scene. Describe the context and background. Where were you? What was happening?
Keep it brief—just enough context for the interviewer to understand.
T
Task
Explain your responsibility. What was your specific role? What were you trying to accomplish?
Focus on YOUR task, not the team's general goal.
A
Action
Describe what YOU did. What specific steps did you take? How did you approach the challenge?
This is the most important part—spend 60% of your answer here. Use "I" not "we."
R
Result
Share the outcome. What happened? Quantify if possible. What did you learn?
Even if the outcome wasn't perfect, highlight what you learned or how you'd do it differently.
Example: "Tell me about a time you helped a client overcome a challenge."
Situation: During my internship at a wellness center, I worked with a 55-year-old client who had been sedentary for 10 years and recently received a pre-diabetes diagnosis.
Task: My responsibility was to design and implement a 12-week exercise program to help improve her metabolic health markers while building sustainable habits.
Action: I started with a comprehensive assessment and learned she was intimidated by the gym environment. I began with home-based exercises and walking programs. I scheduled weekly check-ins to adjust the program and provide accountability. I also coordinated with her physician to track her A1C levels and created a simple exercise log to celebrate small wins.
Result: After 12 weeks, she was exercising 4 days per week consistently, lost 12 pounds, and her A1C dropped from 6.3 to 5.8. Most importantly, she expressed that she finally felt confident in a gym setting and continued training after our program ended.
Pro Tip: Prepare 5-7 STAR stories from your experiences that showcase different skills (teamwork, problem-solving, client success, handling conflict, learning from failure). You can adapt these stories to answer various questions.
