Prompt Engineering

Master the RICE-Q Framework & Get Better AI Results

A structured approach to crafting precise, powerful prompts that transform vague requests into targeted AI outputs for health and fitness professionals.

Why It Works

From vague to precise in seconds

The RICE-Q framework addresses the five critical dimensions AI models need to generate accurate, relevant responses.

Before
"Write me a workout plan"
After RICE-Q
"As a CSCS with 10+ years experience, create a 12-week hypertrophy program for a 35-year-old intermediate lifter training 4x/week..."

Deep Dive

R Role — Set the Expertise

Assigning a role activates relevant knowledge patterns and writing styles. The more specific the role, the more targeted the response.

Weak
"You are a fitness expert"
Strong
"You are a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) with 15+ years of orthopedic rehabilitation experience, certified in dry needling and IASTM, who stays current with JOSPT guidelines"
  • Include years of experience or seniority level
  • Mention specific certifications (CSCS, RDN, DPT, etc.)
  • Reference relevant methodologies or evidence sources
  • Combine roles for hybrid expertise: "Sports dietitian with strength coaching background"

I Instructions — Define the Action

Clear instructions eliminate guesswork. Use action verbs and be explicit about deliverables.

Weak
"Help me with a patient education handout"
Strong
"Create a 1-page patient education handout for ACL post-op care. Include: 1) Week 1-2 exercises with sets/reps, 2) Ice/elevation protocol, 3) Red flags requiring immediate contact, 4) Follow-up appointment schedule"
  • Start with a strong action verb: create, design, analyze, develop
  • Specify quantity: "5 exercises," "3 meal options," "8-week program"
  • Break complex tasks into numbered components
  • State what NOT to include (equally important)

C Context — Provide Background

Context grounds the AI in your specific situation. Without it, you get generic responses.

Weak
"Write a meal plan for weight loss"
Strong
"Client: 28-year-old female CrossFit athlete (5x/week), desk job, 5'6" 155lbs, goal is body recomposition while supporting training. Prefers to limit dairy, budget $100-125/week, meal preps on Sundays."
  • Include patient/client demographics and relevant history
  • Mention constraints: equipment, time, budget, setting
  • Share goals and what success looks like
  • Provide industry-specific details that affect the output

E Examples — Show Don't Tell

Examples are the most powerful way to communicate style, tone, and format. One good example beats paragraphs of description.

Example Pattern
Phase 1 (Weeks 0-2) - Protection Phase:

GOALS:
• Control pain and swelling (VAS <3/10)
• Achieve full passive extension (0°)

EXERCISES:
1. Quad sets - 10 reps × 10 sec holds, 3x/day
Cue: "Tighten thigh, push knee flat into towel"
  • Provide 2-3 examples for pattern recognition
  • Include both positive examples (do this) and negative (not this)
  • Match examples to your exact use case
  • Show the transformation: input → desired output

Q Quality — Set Standards

Quality constraints shape the final output. Be specific about format, length, tone, and evaluation criteria.

Quality Constraints
Requirements:
• All exercises must include specific dosing (sets × reps × frequency)
• Cite relevant CPGs where applicable (e.g., MOON guidelines)
• Use standardized outcome measures (LEFS, NPRS)
• HEP should use 6th-grade reading level
• Include regression AND progression for each exercise
  • Reference clinical guidelines or evidence standards
  • Set reading level for patient materials (5th-6th grade)
  • Specify formatting requirements (bullet points, tables, headers)
  • Include a checklist the AI should verify against

Pro Tip

Customize templates to your specialty

These templates are starting points. After loading a template, modify the Context section to match your specific patient population, setting, and goals. The more specific you are, the better your results.

"A prompt tailored to your exact use case will always outperform a generic template—but a great template gets you 80% of the way there."
